Kam Fay Chinese, Cleveland: Sang Choi Bau; Steamed Oysters; Szechuan Prawns

A lovely Monday evening I decided that it was time for a meal out. Many restaurants are closed on a Monday but Kam Fay in Queen Street,Cleveland is open. They have BYO but I decide to start with a pot of green tea

Now to peruse the Entree menu

A firm favourite is Sang Choi Bao (usually spelled Sang Choy Bow). I have been suffering from nausea due to a medication I am on and I found the fish sauce flavour to be a little strong for my weak stomach, however I ate my two lettuce cups with the mince. Philip and I both thought that it wasn't the best Sang Choy Bow we have eaten.

Next to Mains menu

Philip wasn't very hungry so he chose the Steamed Oysters with Ginger & Shallots. I felt like something spicy so I chose the Szechuan King Prawns Slightly Hot.

The Szechuan King Prawns came out and I was excited to try them. I was disappointed that they were not hot at all. I guess I have a tolerance for heat and that's why I found them a little bland. They had a a nice flavour but just not hot. I should have asked for some chilli powder or chilli seeds but with my stomach not being that strong it was probably a good meal choice for me. I forgot to say no capsicum, so Philip wasn't able to try the dish.

The Steamed Oysters with Ginger & Shallots came out next and they were fairly large oysters. There seemed to be more ginger tonight than the last time and they seemed to overwhelm the gentle flavours of the oysters. Philip ate four oysters and declared himself full so I polished off the last two, having only eaten half of my meal due to fullness.

I was able to take what was left of the King Prawns home and had them for a lunch the next day.
I would still recommend Kam Fay Chinese and will go back there. I think the side effects of the medication I am on spoiled my experience somewhat and I hope the next time we visit I am back to normal. Hubby and I enjoyed the friendly and quick service.

Kam Fay: Satay Beef, Beef Spare Ribs with BBQ sauce

Feeling hungry we headed to Kam Fay for a bite to eat. I felt like some satay, so chose Satay Beef. Always satisfying. The circle in the middle was alight when they served the dish. The beef was tender and the beans were perfectly cooked.

Philip ordered Beef Spareribs with BBQ sauce. I had a taste and it was very nice. The BBQ sauce was very sticky and sweet. A Chinese variation of BBQ sauce.

Kam Fay: Dim SIms, Roast duck with cantonese mushrooms, seafood combination

always a favourite: steamed dim sims

Roast duck with cantonese mushrooms.

An amazing meal. I love the sweetness of the duck and the texture of the Chinese mushrooms.

Seafood combination

I am loving the scallops in this seafood combination. A light sauce that doesn't overpower.

Review: Kam Fay Chinese Restaurant, Cleveland QLD - roast duck and steamed oysters

My husband and I enjoy visiting new restaurants and we had often thought of visiting Kam Fay Chinese in Cleveland but had not visited until one night when we just decided to try something new.
Whilst the restaurant was new to us it had many of our favourite meals on the menu including Roast Duck and Steamed Oysters.

[ Steamed oysters with ginger and chilli ]
The meal was very comforting and we enjoyed some green tea which helped to cut through the oils from the roast duck. Service was prompt and waitresses were friendly and helpful.

The oysters were of large size and overall experience was a positive one. We will definitely return.

Restaurant Review: Taste of China, Cairns

During a holiday in Cairns, Northern Queensland some friends and I were walking along and spotted the sign for 'Taste of China' and our quest for somewhere interesting to eat was finally settled.

With great excitement I stepped inside.
We were greeted warmly by the owner and escorted to sit at our table for three.

Steamed Dim Sims - a favourite entree

The oysters were HUGE! Here's a side-by-side shot for comparison

The more I explored the restaurant the more enamoured I was. This mural really caught my attention.

There was also a tank with mud crabs

And another with lobsters. GIANT lobsters!

My friend and I decided that we would buy a lobster and have it cooked
in 'special sauce' and share it rather than get separate main meals.
When the lobster tails came out we were amazed it came from the one lobster!

And of course we had a course of Asian greens with oyster sauce. Yumm!

They also had fish and abalone. Next time!

I just had to get a photo with the screen. I'd love to buy one.

More photos of Chinese decor for a special friend of mine.
